After several evenings of comfortable weather, we finally
had an incredibly humid one. Not only was I dripping wet while cooking dinner
(which was a Tahini Tuna Salad with fresh tuna, not canned) but I created a 3
foot by 3 foot large puddle by wringing out my shirt between basketball games.
Genny tried her best to beat the heat without the aid of our power-sucking air
conditioner while she studied, but we may cave in and turn it on while we
sleep.
The more memorable point of the day was when the power went
out on campus and the backup generators didn't kick in. Fortunately, one of the
benefits of living in a country frequently hit by hurricanes is that there is
an abundance of portable generators ready to be deployed. So before too long
the school staff wheeled a couple to the classrooms to help power the lectures.
During this time, Will was busy being serenaded by the staff at the campus
activity centre while he tried to ignore them and focus on his calculus
homework.
The rest of the day consisted of a lot of studying for Genny
and working out and basketball for Will. Intramural sports start soon for both
of us. Genny is playing on a soccer team this semester and will get to run up
and down the field for a couple hours each week, while Will is playing
basketball with Foluso Akinradewo (brother of recent US Olympic volleyball
player Foluke Akinradewo, John (gangnam style) Lee, and Ismael Gutierrez and
Sherief Zamzam, overall a pretty ethnically balanced squad if that counts for
anything.
That about sums up our day's worth of activities, other
than...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARRIE DERSHIN! We'll try to blow some of
this warm air up there to Alaska for you.
